Chapter 9

“There are a lot of rules to go over, but you are both here for the night. And I think if I drop any more truths, Sixx is going to keel over,” Lola said, squinting at me. The blood had rushed from my cheeks as my head kept spinning over death.

I still had a whole life ahead of me. Death was a concept that belonged to long ago lost grandparents. I had my share of death, I understood it, but it wasn’t something I would seriously consider. Yet, I recalled each moment running from the crazed wolf, and my heart slammed inside of my chest.

Death by claws.

Death by jaws.

Death by classmates who barely even knew I existed. The only reason they showed any interest in me lately had been because of Ana. Not that I blamed her for the decisions of others, but nausea pooled in my mouth.

“I might be sick.”

“Understandable,” Lola said as matter-of-factly as she could, empathizing with a nod. Ana rolled her eyes where she sat next to me.

“You aren’t helping, Aunt Lola.”

“I’m not trying to. The sooner you realize the danger you put her in, the better. And the sooner she realizes the best thing to do is to keep her head down and get the hell out of dodge, the better. I’m sorry, Sixx, but your life is never going to be the same. I’m not going to sugarcoat it.”

“Maybe you should,” Ana mumbled.

“Like I got it sugar-coated to me?” Lola snapped. As she yelled, I didn’t realize before that she favored one leg over the other. Not to mention her hair covered one side of her neck, but when she leaned forward, I saw the scar that marred her skin. Ana looked down, ashamed, but still had a sense of defensiveness about her.

And as I watched them, I couldn’t help but put myself in Ana’s shoes. She had told me before that her life had been a pretty lonely existence. Lola was the only person in her life who knew her secret; hell, I didn’t even really know her secret. Ana wanted someone that she could talk to, someone who understood. A friend. “That…”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to snap at you, Ana. This was never on you. That was wrong of me,” Lola said, pulling her niece in for a hug. I looked away, trying to give them a bit of privacy for what seemed like an old wound.

“It’s been a long night. I will go pick up a pizza, and we will talk more when I get back. I don’t think it needs to be said, but just in case, don’t fucking leave,” Lola added.

Ana smiled at her aunt. “Not even…”

“Not even. Look, keep her safe. That’s all I am asking. And I’m probably paranoid, but I will feel better if I can be here with you two. Pull out whatever weapon you feel most comfortable with. Sixx, I am going to go out on a limb and say you have no formal training?”

“Uh…”

I blinked at her a couple of times before she shook her head.
